Layla is my hero. Her true story, of life as a Somali war refugee, is extraordinary. When war broke out, Layla at age ten, fled, running from her home in Mogadishu. For years, she experienced atrocities, unimaginable - lions eating the living and the dying, genocide and rape. Living on only tree sap, charcoal and dirt, she trekked entirely on her own in the bush for a year, before making it to the Kenyan/Somalian border. Her spirit unshakeable, she followed her life-long dream, journeying to America and falling in love with a Irish Navy Seal. Now a peace activist on Maui, she, speaks out on behalf of the innocent women and children in Somalia's forgotten war. She runs marathons, and uses running to cope with her Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, as well as to raise awareness for the women and children of Somalia.
